The problem of a sudden decrease or cessation of milk production in HF cows is called Sudden Hypogalactia.

Main Causes

  • Feed change / lack of balanced feeding
  • Stress, weather changes or transport
  • Subclinical mastitis (invisible infection)
  • Metabolic disorders — such as Ketosis, Milk fever
  • Low water intake (HF cows need 80–120 liters/day)
  • Heat stress

Symptoms

  • Sudden decrease or cessation of milk production
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mild fever or lethargy
  • Change in milk quality
  • Rapid breathing or mild dehydration

Diagnosis

  • Mastitis check – CMT test
  • Ketosis test (Urine strip / Rothera test)
  • Temperature monitoring

  • NSAIDs – Meloxicam (0.5 mg/kg)

Prevention

  • Avoid stress before and after milking
  • Balanced ration + 24x7 water access
  • Heat management (fans, foggers)
